Neolithic barrows in Great Britain

The West Kennet Long Barrow, located near Avebury in Wiltshire, is one of the most impressive and best-preserved neolithic long barrows in Britain. It was built around 3650 BC and initially served as a burial chamber, where the remains of nearly 50 individuals were interred.

Visiting West Kennet Long Barrow

With a length of over 100 meters, the West Kennet Long Barrow is one of the largest structures of its kind. Its construction using local sarsen stones and imported oolithic limestone from the Cotswolds attests to the impressive craftsmanship of the ancient communities.

Historical sites in Wiltshire

After a relatively short period of use as a burial site, access to the burial chamber was sealed with large sarsen blocks in the late Neolithic period. In the following centuries, other significant monuments were built in the surrounding landscape, including the Avebury Stone Circle, the West Kennet Avenue, and Silbury Hill, indicating the enduring cultural importance of the region.

This is a pleasant place to visit, but access is limited due to its location on private land. The nearby Silbury Hill is also worth exploring. Parking is available for about 6 cars. Visitors can enter the barrow, but only for the first 20 feet.

Beginning in Avebury, a lovely place to visit, I walked to the long barrow. The path has uneven ground that can get muddy, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The walk was amazing, and I even encountered some local cows.

Reflecting on the age and construction of this structure, one must wonder about the sophistication of our ancestors over 5000 years ago. The importance of this place demands respect. Building this structure without modern tools on top of a small hill is a testament to human resourcefulness.

This is an awe-inspiring experience, truly impressive in its sheer size and the fact that it was created so many years ago.

The walk from the layby parking is only half a mile, but it is uphill and can be wet and muddy. Visitors should be prepared for these conditions. The views from the top are spectacular. The long barrow is also quite interesting.

This is a beautiful spot with stunning views. The walk from the road can be muddy, so good boots are recommended. Visitors can enter the chambers at one end. It's absolutely wonderful, and it's free!

The journey from Avebury to the barrow can be long and muddy, but it's definitely worth it. If you drive, you can park closer. Walking inside this human construction from ancient times brings a profound sense of the impermanence of human existence.

This amazing 5,500-year-old long barrow is just a 15-minute walk from the layby on the main road near Silbury Hill. Easy to access, visitors should bring a flashlight to explore the dark corners. The site is free to access at all hours and offers a 360-degree scenic view from the top.

This is a free neolithic burial mound where visitors can enter the chamber. It was loved by a 5-year-old granddaughter.
